Today’s Unique Brunch Recipe: Savory French Toast Casserole

As the weather turns chilly and the holiday season approaches, I find myself craving cozy brunch dishes that are perfect for feeding a crowd. Today, I’m excited to share with you my twist on a classic brunch favorite: Savory French Toast Casserole. This dish is a delightful blend of savory and sweet flavors that will impress your guests and warm your soul.

To create this dish, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 baguette (about 300g), sliced into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded gruyere cheese
  • 6 slices of cooked bacon, chopped
  • 3 scallions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of butter

Before you begin, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined. Add the cubed baguette to the bowl and toss to coat, allowing the bread to soak up the mixture for about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon, scallions, and fresh thyme, cooking until the scallions are softened and fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.

Now, it’s time to assemble the casserole. Spread half of the egg-soaked bread cubes in an even layer in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle half of the shredded gruyere cheese on top, followed by half of the bacon mixture. Repeat this layering process with the remaining ingredients.

Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. The kitchen will be filled with a mouthwatering aroma as the casserole bakes to golden perfection.

Once the casserole is ready, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. This dish serves approximately 6 people, with each serving weighing around 250 grams. As an estimate, each serving contains about 350 calories.

A clever tip for this recipe is to sprinkle a little extra shredded gruyere cheese on top of the casserole before baking for an extra gooey and cheesy finish. Feel free to customize this recipe by adding your favorite ingredients like roasted vegetables, ham, or different types of cheese.

I hope you enjoy making and devouring this Savory French Toast Casserole as much as I do. It’s the perfect dish for a leisurely weekend brunch or a festive holiday gathering. Embrace the flavors, get creative, and make it your own!
