Today’s Unique Dish: Savory Apple Pancake with Caramelized Onions

As the weather starts getting cooler, I find myself craving warm, comforting meals that remind me of cozy autumn evenings. Today, I am excited to share with you a unique recipe that combines the sweetness of apples with the savory richness of caramelized onions in a delicious pancake. This dish is perfect for a leisurely weekend brunch or a satisfying weeknight dinner.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • Fresh chives for garnish

Kitchen Tools:

  • skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • spatula

To begin, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown. This process usually takes about 20-25 minutes. Once the onions are caramelized, remove them from the skillet and set them aside.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until a smooth batter forms. In the same skillet you used for the onions, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples and sauté until they are slightly softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Pour the batter over the apples in the skillet, making sure it spreads evenly. Cook the pancake for about 5 minutes, or until the edges start to set. Carefully flip the pancake using a spatula and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until it is cooked through and golden brown.

Once the pancake is cooked, top it with the caramelized onions and fresh chives. Serve the savory apple pancake hot, either sliced into wedges or as a whole pancake.

The approximate total weight of the cooked dish is 800 grams, with 4 servings averaging 200 grams each. Each serving is approximately 350 calories.

For a unique twist, try adding a sprinkle of crumbled blue cheese on top of the pancake before serving. The creamy cheese pairs perfectly with the sweet apples and caramelized onions, adding an extra layer of flavor to the dish.

I hope you enjoy making this savory apple pancake as much as I do. Feel free to experiment with different herbs, cheeses, or toppings to make this recipe your own. Happy cooking!
