Duck with Figs and Mushrooms: A Family Favorite Recipe

Duck with Figs and Mushrooms: A Family Favorite Recipe

August 6, 2025 Written by John

Welcome to My Kitchen!

Today, I am excited to share with you a unique and flavorful recipe that has been a favorite in my family for generations. As the weather starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change color, I find myself craving warm and comforting dishes that are packed with bold flavors. This dish combines the richness of duck with the sweetness of figs and the earthiness of mushrooms, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that is sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Ingredients:

  • 1 duck breast (skin-on), approximately 300g
  • 4 fresh figs, sliced
  • 100g shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 50ml balsamic vinegar
  • 30ml honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Kitchen Tools:

  • cast iron skillet
  • chef’s knife
  • wooden spoon
  • measuring cups

To start, score the skin of the duck breast and season generously with salt and pepper. Place the duck breast skin side down in a cold cast iron skillet and place over medium heat. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, until the skin is crisp and golden brown. Flip the duck breast and continue to cook for another 4-6 minutes, or until cooked to your liking. Remove from the skillet and let rest.

In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are golden brown and caramelized. Add the sliced figs, balsamic vinegar, honey, and fresh thyme leaves. Cook for a few minutes until the figs are soft and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Slice the duck breast and serve it on a bed of the mushroom and fig mixture. Drizzle any remaining sauce over the top and garnish with fresh thyme leaves. Enjoy this delectable dish with a glass of your favorite red wine.

This dish serves 2 people and each serving is approximately 350g. One serving is estimated to be around 450 calories.

One clever tip for this recipe is to save the rendered duck fat to use in other dishes. Duck fat adds a rich and savory flavor to roasted vegetables or potatoes.

I hope you give this recipe a try and make it your own by adding your own twist to it. Enjoy!
