It’s a cool, rainy day today, and I’m feeling the need for some warm, comforting food to lift my spirits. That’s why I’m sharing a unique twist on a classic dish that always brings me joy: shepherd’s pie. This version incorporates unexpected ingredients to create a dish that’s sure to surprise and delight your taste buds.

To start, you’ll need the following ingredients: 500g of ground bison meat, 1 diced sweet potato, 1 can of chickpeas, 1/2 cup of frozen peas, 1 tablespoon of tomato paste, 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of cumin, salt, pepper, olive oil, and vegetable broth.

For this recipe, you’ll need the following kitchen tools:

  • chef’s knife
  • cutting board
  • large skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • baking dish

Start by preheating your oven to 375°F. In a large skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground bison meat and cook until browned. Add the diced sweet potato and cook until slightly softened. Next, add the chickpeas, frozen peas, tomato paste, smoked paprika, cinnamon, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook for a few more minutes.

Pour in enough vegetable broth to cover the mixture and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

While the filling is simmering, prepare the topping. In a separate pot, boil the sweet potato until soft. Drain and mash the sweet potato with a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper until smooth.

Transfer the filling to a baking dish and spread the mashed sweet potato over the top. Use a fork to create a decorative pattern on the surface. Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Once the shepherd’s pie is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. This hearty and flavorful dish weighs approximately 1800g, serves 6, with each serving weighing around 300g. Each serving is approximately 400 calories.

A unique tip for this recipe is to sprinkle some grated parmesan cheese over the mashed sweet potato topping before baking. This adds a rich, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the filling.

I hope you give this unique shepherd’s pie recipe a try and enjoy it as much as I do. Feel free to experiment with different ingredients and make it your own. Happy cooking!
