The Ultimate Caramelized Onion and Mushroom Quiche

As the cool autumn weather settles in, I find myself craving warm, comforting dishes that remind me of cozy evenings by the fireplace. Today, I want to share with you my twist on a classic quiche — a caramelized onion and mushroom quiche that is sure to wow your taste buds and fill your home with amazing aromas.

Ingredients:

  • pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced (~400g)
  • 300g mushrooms, sliced
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Kitchen Tools:

  • rolling pin
  • pie dish
  • skillet
  • whisk

I start by preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C) and rolling out the pie crust to fit my pie dish. Once the crust is in place, I prick the bottom with a fork and blind bake it for 10 minutes until it’s slightly golden.

In a skillet over medium heat, I caramelize the sliced onions in a bit of olive oil until they are soft and golden brown, which usually takes about 20-25 minutes. I then add in the sliced mushrooms and cook them until they are tender and all the liquid has evaporated.

In a separate bowl, I whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. I then stir in the caramelized onions, mushrooms, and shredded Gruyère cheese until everything is well combined.

I pour the mixture into the partially baked pie crust and bake the quiche in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown.

Once the quiche is done baking, I let it cool slightly before slicing into it. The creamy Gruyère cheese marries beautifully with the sweet caramelized onions and earthy mushrooms, creating a harmony of flavors in every bite.

One clever tip for this quiche is to sprinkle a bit of smoked paprika on top before baking for an added depth of flavor. It gives the quiche a subtle smokiness that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the caramelized onions.

I hope you give this caramelized onion and mushroom quiche a try and make it your own with your favorite seasonal ingredients. Enjoy creating this warm and flavorful dish for your loved ones!

Happy cooking!
