Exploring Autumn Flavors with a Unique Squash and Apple Pie

As the leaves turn golden and the air gets crisp, I find myself craving hearty, comforting dishes that celebrate the flavors of autumn. Today, I’m excited to share with you a completely new recipe that combines the sweetness of butternut squash with the tartness of apples in a delightful pie. This unique twist on a classic dessert will surely become a favorite at your fall gatherings.

For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • butternut squash (peeled and cubed) – 500g
  • apples (peeled and sliced) – 300g
  • brown sugar – 100g
  • cinnamon – 1 tsp
  • nutmeg – 1/2 tsp
  • allspice – 1/4 tsp
  • lemon juice – 1 tbsp
  • pie crust – 1 store-bought or homemade
  • egg wash – for brushing

To bring this unique pie to life, you will need the following kitchen tools:

  • peeler
  • knife
  • mixing bowl
  • rolling pin
  • round pie dish

Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) and preparing your pie crust in the pie dish. In a mixing bowl, combine the cubed butternut squash, sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice. Toss everything together until well coated.

Fill the pie crust with the squash and apple mixture, spreading it out evenly. Top the pie with another layer of pie crust, crimping the edges to seal the pie. Brush the top crust with the egg wash for a golden finish.

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.

This unique squash and apple pie weighs approximately 1200g once cooked, making about 8 servings. Each serving is around 150g, with an estimated calorie count of 250 per portion.

One clever tip to enhance the flavors of this pie is to sprinkle a tablespoon of chopped fresh sage over the filling before adding the top crust. The earthy herb adds a savory depth to the sweet and tart flavors of the squash and apples.

I hope this recipe inspires you to get creative in the kitchen and explore new flavor combinations. Share this unique squash and apple pie with your loved ones and let each bite warm your soul on a crisp autumn day. Enjoy!
