Exploring New Flavors: Sweet and Savory Bacon Jam

Today, I’m excited to share a recipe that combines two of my favorite flavors: sweet and savory. This dish is perfect for a lazy weekend brunch or as a unique gift for a food-loving friend. The rich, smoky taste of bacon paired with the sweetness of caramelized onions and maple syrup creates a delicious and versatile jam that can be enjoyed in so many ways.

To start, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 300g of thick-cut bacon
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 100g of brown sugar
  • 50ml of maple syrup
  • 50ml of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp of black pepper

You’ll also need the following kitchen tools:

  • skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • chopping board
  • chef’s knife

Start by cooking the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until it’s crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and drain on a paper towel, leaving about 2 tablespoons of bacon fat in the pan. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook until they are caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.

Next, crumble the cooked bacon and add it back to the skillet with the caramelized onions. Stir in the brown sugar, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for another 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened to a jam-like consistency.

Once the bacon jam is ready, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Transfer the jam to a food processor and pulse until you reach your desired texture – whether chunky or smooth.

This sweet and savory bacon jam weighs approximately 600 grams when cooked. It serves about 8 people, with each serving weighing around 75 grams. Each serving contains approximately 200 calories.

A clever tip for this recipe is to store the bacon jam in a sterilized mason jar and refrigerate it overnight before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together even more, creating a richer and more delicious jam.

I encourage you to give this sweet and savory bacon jam a try. Spread it on toast, top your favorite burger with it, or even use it as a glaze for roasted vegetables. The possibilities are endless, so feel free to get creative and make this recipe your own. Enjoy!
